The Macedonia Corporate Governance and Company Law Project provides technical assistance to improve Macedonia’s corporate governance and commercial law environment. The three-year project works with a wide range of Macedonian counterparts in the public and private sector, provides technical assistance on business and legal topics, and facilitates amongst others the development and implementation of the 2004 company law, the 2005 insolvency law and the 2005 registration law.
The project promotes the development, understanding, acceptance and enforcement of modern corporate governance standards in the 2004 company law with training programs (universities and private sector), work shops, TV and radio shows, town hall meetings, newspaper placements and NGO development programs. The activities of the project aim at more progressive and efficient ways of running a business, the establishment of independent boards of directors, the protection of shareholders’ rights and the greater acceptance of modern corporate governance and corporate social responsibility standards (OECD/UNDP). Other goals of the project include the development of legislation enabling streamlined registration procedures and a one-stop-shop for business registration and a national electronic commercial register for enterprises and investors in Macedonia;
The project develops strategies for harmonizing commercial laws with the 2004 company law and the EU Company Law Directives. It also provides technical assistance to Macedonian counterparts (Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Justice) in law revision and stakeholder management.
