Avian Influenza Simulation Exercise, organized by FAO with funding from USAID Washington (September 17 & 18)
On September 17 and 18, a National
Simulation Exercise for Avian Influenza took place at the Hotel
Continental in Skopje, coordinated by the U.N. Food and Agriculture
Organization and funded by USAID Washington. The aim of the exercise
was to enhance Macedonia's preparedness and capacity to face outbreaks
of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in animal and human
populations.
The lessons learned about interaction, co-ordination and
communication between the veterinary and public health sectors on
national and local levels will be directly applicable to other
preparedness for other possible pandemics. Participants included
representatives of the Veterinary Directorate, the Institute for Public
Health, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. USAID Macedonia Mission
Director, Mike Fritz, gave opening remarks.
