USAID MACEDONIA EDUCATION OFFICE

Macedonia lags considerably behind the transition countries in education performance as shown in the results of several international surveys. Education is a big priority for the Government of Macedonia and USAID, as the lack of employable skills substantially hinders economic growth and threatens Macedonia’s prospects for EU membership.
USAID MACEDONIA EDUCATION OFFICE

Since 2002, USAID has been implementing programs addressing all levels of the education system – primary, secondary and higher. These programs have focused on six key areas: 1) strengthening students` core skills and critical thinking, 2) equipping teachers with modern methods, 3) provided older students with practical business skills, 4) increasing access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT), including activities that earned Macedonia the title “First Wireless Country in the World”, 5) providing educational support to disadvantaged Roma students, and 6) establishing South East European University, the first multi-ethnic, multi-lingual university in the region.

In 2007, the Mission’s efforts focused on improving the quality of teaching and on modernizing education. USAID projects provided nationwide internet access, installed computers in 233 primary schools in Macedonia, trained almost 10,000 teachers in the integration of ICT into the curriculum, and renovated schools in eight municipalities. Support to Roma disadvantaged students has resulted in retention rates of 98 percent for assisted primary school students versus just 42 percent for unassisted Roma students, 82 percent of student-run businesses generated income this year, and the national internet penetration rate has increased from 6 to 32 percent due in large part to USAID activities.
